What this means
A 3-person tent gives your group comfort
A 3-person tent for two people is the sweet spot for comfort backpacking. Three actual people will fit but gear storage becomes tight — use the vestibule. Check the door configuration: two doors means nobody climbs over anyone at 2am.

What affects the tent size you need
Manufacturer ratings are not honest
A tent rated for 3 people fits 3 sleeping bags at maximum compression. That's not camping, that's sardines. In reality a 3-person tent comfortably sleeps 2 people with gear, or 3 people who are very comfortable with each other. This calculator automatically adjusts for this and recommends going one size up.
Vestibule space matters more than floor space
Most arguments inside tents are about gear storage. Without a vestibule, wet boots, muddy packs, and damp layers come inside the sleeping area. On multi-day trips this becomes a real quality-of-life issue. A smaller tent with a good vestibule beats a bigger tent without one.
Trip type changes floor space needs
An ultralight fastpacker and a car camper have completely different space requirements. The calculator adjusts floor space per person by trip type, from 0.9 square metres for ultralight use to 1.7 square metres for base camp comfort. Getting this right means you're not carrying more tent than you need.
Two doors beats more floor space for groups
If you're buying a tent for two or more people, prioritise two doors over extra floor space. Nobody wants to climb over a tentmate at 3am. This single feature improves group camping experience more than almost anything else.
